Morning sickness: a survival guide

4 min read · MyBloomingBelly editorial

First, the misnomer: “morning” sickness happens at any hour, and for about 7 in 10 mothers it is part of early pregnancy. It typically starts around week 6, peaks near weeks 8–10, and eases for most by weeks 14–16. It reflects hormones doing their job — though knowing that helps little at 7 a.m. over the sink.

The strategy that works best is grazing: an empty stomach makes nausea worse, so keep it never-quite-empty. Dry crackers before rising, small meals every 2–3 hours, protein-rich snacks, and cold foods when hot smells trigger you (cold food smells less).
