Gestational diabetes, gently explained
Gestational diabetes (GDM) means your body cannot quite keep up with pregnancy’s extra insulin demands. It matters to catch because untreated high sugars can grow a very large baby and raise delivery complications — and it matters to relax about because managed GDM pregnancies overwhelmingly end with healthy mothers and babies.
You did not cause it. Placental hormones actively block insulin; some bodies (South Asians run a genetically higher risk) simply hit the limit sooner. That is also why everyone is screened between 24–28 weeks, usually with a glucose drink test.
