Baby care

Safe sleep, simply explained

Remember ABC: baby sleeps Alone (in their own sleep space), on their Back, in a Crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress.

Keep the sleep space bare: fitted sheet only. No pillows, quilts, bumpers, soft toys or loose blankets in the first year. Dress baby in a sleep sack or one extra layer instead of covers.

Room-sharing (babyโ€™s cot in your room) for at least the first 6 months is recommended and makes night feeds easier โ€” but adult beds, sofas and armchairs are not safe sleep surfaces for babies.

Keep the room comfortably cool, never overheated, and completely smoke-free. Offering a pacifier at sleep time (once feeding is established) is associated with lower SIDS risk.

Back-sleeping is for sleep; awake tummy time is for play and building strength. Once baby can roll both ways independently, they may choose their own position.
