Pain relief in labour: your full menu
Start with this: there is no medal for maximum pain, and no asterisk on a birth that used relief. The best plan is knowing the whole menu and choosing freely on the day β including changing your mind.
Your built-in tools are stronger than they sound. Slow, long exhales calm the nervous system; movement and upright positions work with gravity; warm water (shower or tub in early labour) is famously effective; and continuous support from one trusted person measurably improves outcomes. Massage, music and dim lights are not decoration β they lower stress hormones that fight labour.
